at Aaber ArtSpace in München. Jim Avignon has curated a groupshow
showing the work of Fehmi Baumbach, Jon Burgerman, Mia Gideon,
Lea Heinrich and myself.

Sorry I have not been able to update my blog in the last few months, I have been way too busy.
2011 has been a fantastic year and I am sad to see it go... but hopefully the new pocket diary
will help me and everyone else to also make great plans for 2012!

Since 2006 Anna Bühler and I have been publishing this diary, every year we invited twelve artist from around the world. You can find the list of the artists who are participating this year on our brand new website, which will include an archive soon. And you can buy the diary in my etsy shop.

Moomin Mama

I only discovered the magical world of the moomins in my early twenties and I'm not actually sure it was meant to be for kids. Tove Jansson used to live on a little Finnish island called Pietilä and its a dream of mine to visit it one day. I was told she always left the litte wooden house in perfect condition and put a bottle of vodka in the cubboard in case some unkown visitor would drop by.

Hidden behind the scaffolding is my wall painting and the shop selling customised
shirts and sweatshirts with my designs.

Now SIMONUNO has also a printing studio just nearby the shop.

The Boxergirl print which I have done for Concrete Hermit
is being shown among many talents at the Somerset House
exhibition Pick Me Up.

The exhibition has been mentioned in Financial Times on
the 24th of April. My work has been highlighted as being
sold at rock bottom prices!

Everyone knows and loves Dick Bruna.... but Fiep Westendorp ist another amazing Dutch
illustrator who deserves international recognition. Because auf their simplicity there is no
tweeness in her creations and they have so much character despite having no eyes.

Since I can't read Japanese I can't tell you much about the amazing illustrator
Junzo Terada who works at Comes Graphic. I just love his style of old fashioned
Eastblock children's illustration with a modern twist of japanese cuteness.
He applies his illustrations to all kinds of materials as well as soft toys.

The great people from Frinton Press invited me to take part in their Wrapping Paper project.
16 artists were asked to submit a pattern design which was then hand screen printed and beautifully packed by Frinton Press.

The Ark is a project initiated by the argentinian design studio DGPH.

Each artist was asked submit his version of a local animal. I chose the badger. Have you ever noticed how much a badger's head resembles a wrestling mask? Which made me think that although we should protect animals maybe they are not as weak and helpless as we think.
El Tejón is a fierce creature ready to pounce on any opponent!

Portrait photography has always been a big inspiration for me. The one who impressed me most
by his approach is Jim Goldberg. In his book Raised by Wolves he follows the lives of teenage runaways on the streets of Los Angeles and San Francisco from 1985 until 1995.

The few examples I could find don't do the book justice... it is so much more than strong pictures of teenage rebellion. There are long interviews, spontanious polaroids, hand written notes and letters from the kids, photos of their posessions and their environment - you get the full picture.

Through the research for my last exhibition I discovered this book about Eiji Tsuburaya
by August Ragone. Great photos of man and monster and how they merge sometimes.

"It would have been far easier and cheaper for Tsuburaya to have gone to a construction site and filmed ordinary trucks lugging dirt than to have built a sprawling miniature set like this. Realism is not the point. It's about style; it's about mood. There's integrity in the way Tsuburaya and his people worked".
